Basil has helped shape the resort’s tourism landscape with millions of pounds worth of positive, high profile publicity and media coverage over the years, and made a significant contribution to the local community.

Raising millions of pounds for local charities including The Grand Theatre and the HIV Trust, Basil is a true sand grown entrepreneur who has put his heart and soul into Blackpool’s tourism economy with his original, unique show business acumen.

Mr Newby is delighted with the announcement:

"I am very grateful to all the lovely people who went out of their way to nominate me for this prestigious award. I am truly humbled and honoured to be receiving an MBE from Her Majesty The Queen.

At first I thought it was a joke when I was notified and it has been an amazing way to end the year. Having been given the all clear for cancer recently, receiving an MBE is a real boost for my morale.

Being a sand-grown local entrepreneur, this award is for the whole of Blackpool and I am so very proud to be an ambassador for the resort and bring some positive, good news for the people of Blackpool. This award is for the people of Blackpool.

This MBE serves as an inspiration for other business people in the resort, as Blackpool has endured a difficult few years with the recession, we should never give up hope and keep doing the best we can, it feels like a Phoenix rising from the flames moment! After all the hard times we have all worked through in Blackpool, it proves there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you so much to all the people who made this happen, it is a most humbling and delightful experience."

The management, staff and all cast & entertainment team at Funny Girls Ltd would like to congratulate Basil Newby on receiving an MBE on this very special day.

Ends.
